Legendary racer and tuner Steve Saleen is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Ford Mustang with his own special edition, dubbed the 2010 SMS 460 Mustang. SMS Supercars has released the first sketch of the 2010 SMS 460 and SMS 460X Mustangs, hinting at the pony car goodness expected to reach the streets and strips this summer.
“You have to go with the times. While the Mustang remains an icon, Ford has done a very good job with the 2010 model. I wanted to interpret it using my signature to create the latest Steve Saleen version of this American favorite,” said SMS Supercars CEO and President Steve Saleen in a released statement.
Having just previewed the SMS 570 Challenger at the New York auto show, we know Steve’s latest car-enhancing business is setting a high-standard in vehicle execution, and this upcoming Mustang is certain to carry on that tradition.
The exterior is dressed with a distinct front fascia, SMS Red Butterfly air-induction hood, front and side splitters, rear fascia, and a rear diffuser. The real excitement is under that bulging hood, where the base offering is a 4.6-liter V-8 engine with 470 hp and 427 lbs.-ft. of torque. The more powerful SMS 460X Mustang engine with all new internals and headwork delivers 655 hp and 600 lbs.-ft. out of the enlarged 5.0-liter V-8. Both use the new SMS 296 Supercharger unveiled at the New York auto show. Transmission options are a five-speed automatic or five-speed manual on the 460 or a six-speed SMST manual on the top of the line 460X. SMS Performance claims the 460 Mustang accelerates from 0-60 mph in the low 4 seconds, while the 460X manages the same in the lower 4’s.
In addition to prodigious engine output, handling, roadholding, and braking play an equally important role. The 2010 SMS 460 Mustangs feature Steve’s signature Watt’s linkage suspension with all-new geometry. New SMS brakes front and rear deliver impressive stopping power to match the jaw-dropping performance.
More information on these Mustangs will be released later this spring, as Saleen and his team prepare to release their stampede in the summer.
